IPL with Levulan®  (Photodynamic Therapy) - Removes Sun Damage, Precancerous Areas, & Decreases Acne Breakouts

Intense Pulsed Light with Levulan® (Photodynamic Therapy) uses the light sensitizing chemical Levulan® to produce a more dramatic reaction to the IPL treatment. This technique is recommended especially for removing sun damage and scaly precancerous areas or actinic keratoses, for treating rosacea and for reducing resistant acne breakouts. It accomplishes in one week what a prescription cream that causes crusting takes up to four weeks to accomplish. It has also been found to be excellent for treating acne, usually decreasing breakouts for several months after a series of three treatments.

The principle behind this therapy is the use of special light waves that penetrate the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and go directly to the dermis (the layer below). The IPL therapy not only reduces spots and redness, it improves skin texture, reduces fine lines and makes pores appear smaller.

What To Expect from IPL with Levulan® Therapy

In order to give you the best results, we perform a microdermabrasion first so that the photosensitizing medication Levulan® penetrates as deeply as possible. The Levulan® is applied and then removed after one hour. To make the treatment comfortable, we then apply a cream anesthetic, which is removed after about 15 minutes. This is followed by a treatment with the Intense Pulsed Light device, requiring about 20 minutes to perform. There is a snapping sensation when the treatment is done, but the anesthetic cream will usually make the procedure painless.

Following treatment the skin is often red and may feel sunburned for the first two days. The skin becomes tight and brown spots appear darker until days 3-5, when peeling occurs. Because of the intense photosensitization that increases the effectiveness of the IPL device, sun exposure is to be strictly avoided for 48 hours after treatment.
