Safe, Permanent Hair Reduction for Skin of Any Color
Laser hair removal has come a long way and now it can be done with skin of every color. Cynthia Elliott, MD, has been an instructor for Cutera Lasers since 2007, and has taught physicians in the US and the Caribbean how to perform the treatment safely and effectively.
In general, significant permanent dark hair reduction can be achieved in an average of about seven treatment sessions. Not all hairs are actively growing at any one time and hair follicles have three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. Laser and IPL hair reduction treatments work by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase when treated. Since hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, treatments are repeated every 4 to 8 weeks to catch hair entering this phase.
Course hair, such as that found in the bikini area, underarms, and beard, is reduced faster and more completely than fine hair. Most people will notice after the first or second treatment that new hair grows slower and is finer and softer before eventually not recurring.
The number of treatments required depends on multiple factors including individual hair thickness, the concentration of dark pigment in the hair, hormone levels, and your hairs’ growth cycle. People with hormone abnormalities are advised to have their hormone levels normalized before undergoing laser hair removal so that they can achieve optimal results.
Our Laser Technology
Skinspirations has two different laser technologies to reduce unwanted dark hair in skin of any color permanently.
Our Cutera XEO® laser platform has both a long pulsed 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser, that can be safely used to reduce hair in even the darkest skin, as well as the ProWave 770™ laser that targets even fine dark hairs on light skin. Clinical studies have shown more than 80% hair reduction persisting at least six months after only three treatments.
As the cool tip of the laser is moved over the skin, pulses of light are delivered to the underlying hair follicles. There’s a mild, stinging sensation with each pulse but most people find it very tolerable. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others but no local anesthesia or pain medicine is typically required except for the bikini area, inside the nose and over the upper lip. As a courtesy to our patients, we provide complimentary cream anesthetic for patients to apply an hour before arrival when treating those areas.
Laser Hair Removal For Men
Battling unwanted body hair with shaving or waxing can feel like a never-ending battle and luckily laser hair reduction is not only less painful, the results are longer lasting. Laser hair reduction offers a permanent solution that can help you feel more confident every day.
Men with coarse and/or curly hair commonly suffer from pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), which is a chronic inflammatory disorder causing pustules, hyperpigmented spots, and sometimes even scarring where hairs curve back and either re-enter or grow under the skin. It’s most common in the beard area of men of African or Asian descent but many women often experience it in the bikini area. Laser hair reduction has been found to be the most effective, long-term solution for PFB.
Laser technology heats the pigment in the hair follicle, causing the hair to grow back finer and less likely to become trapped.
Men typically have thicker, denser hair than women, especially on their face, chest and back, which can require more sessions than average, and because of their high testosterone levels, they may also require periodic touchups to maintain.
Common areas where men seek permanent hair reduction are the neck, chest, back, shoulders, buttocks and the groin (Brozilian), especially in Florida’s humid climate.

How Do I Prepare for a Laser Hair Reduction Treatment?
It is important that you don’t pluck or wax the hair to be treated for at least two weeks before your treatments so that the hairs are present in the follicles. However, you should shave the area to be treated the day before or on the day of your treatment so that the hair isn’t protruding from the skin, where it can burn.
Even though the Cutera XEO® is safe for hair removal on dark skin, limiting sun exposure and self-tanning products before treatments will increase the speed of hair reduction.
Am I a Good Candidate for Hair Reduction Treatments?
Both laser and IPL hair reduction treatments are only effective on dark hair. For white, blonde or gray hair, electrolysis is needed for hair reduction.
Patients with excessive hair growth due to hormonal problems, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or excessive androgen hormones, will not respond significantly to any laser hair removal treatments until the hormone problem has been treated. New hair follicles may develop with aging due to changing hormone levels.
