Pigment Problems, Rosacea, and Redness
Pigmentation Affects All Skin Colors
Skin of every color can develop problems with pigment or redness due to chronic sun exposure, hormones, genetics, or medical skin disorders.
Brown spots that are darker than the surrounding skin are often a result of chronic sun exposure and may develop many years after someone starts using sunscreen.
Hormonal influences play an important role in the patchy dark pigmentation seen on both sides of the face in melasma so it requires a different treatment strategy than sunspots.
Skin that tans easily is prone to developing darkened areas, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, in areas where there had been irritation or an injury. Certain lasers or strong chemical peels can worsen post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation so it’s important to have experienced clinicians choose a treatment to improve it.
Light skin tends to be more prone to a loss of normal pigmentation in scars or areas of skin injury. A skin disorder called vitiligo causes the patchy loss of all of the pigment in affected areas, and it can occur in all skin colors.
Facial redness can be due to multiple causes including rosacea, sun damage, hormones, and medication, to name just a few. Luckily, normal skin color can usually be restored with the treatments available at Skinspirations.

Rosacea
Rosacea and general facial redness or flushing have a lot of similarities but the redness caused by both can be effectively improved with treatments available at Skinspirations.
Rosacea is a chronic facial skin disorder that affects more than 16 million Americans. It’s characterized by redness mostly in the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead, caused by the dilation of multiple tiny blood vessels just below the skin’s surface. Some people with rosacea develop visible blood vessels in the reddened areas. In some cases, it causes tiny bumps in the central face as well. Ocular rosacea is a form of rosacea causing eye problems like redness or severely dry eyes, occasionally without facial redness or bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while. Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, other skin problems or natural ruddiness.
Rosacea can affect anyone. But it’s most common in middle-aged women who have light skin. There’s no cure for rosacea, but treatment can control and reduce the signs and symptoms. If you’ve developed worsening facial redness or a swollen red nose, see a dermatologist for treatment of the condition. They can determine if the problem is rosacea and offer treatment of the condition.
The National Rosacea Society has released an updated version of “Understanding Rosacea,” an educational booklet for patients and physicians that can be downloaded free of charge from the NRS website.
Another common cause of facial redness is flushing. Flushed skin occurs when tiny blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin dilate. It’s most visible in areas where the blood vessels are close to the surface of the skin, such as the nose, cheeks, neck, and chest. There are multiple causes of flushing including emotional stress, medications, hormone changes, and histamine-mediated reactions.
Regardless of the cause of facial redness, Skinspirations has treatments to reduce it as well as the symptoms of ocular rosacea.
When tiny blood vessels are causing the redness seen with rosacea or flushing, laser vein therapy is the most effective treatment. For general redness or ocular rosacea, a series of IPL treatments work best.
